Install Kodi on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad

Kodi is a free, open-source media player from the XBMC Foundation. It is not available on the App Store for Apple TV, which is why many people never get to try it on the big screen. KTB installs Kodi on your Apple TV, iPhone or iPad and keeps it signed while your subscription is active – no computer and no jailbreak required.

What is Kodi?

Kodi turns your device into a media centre for your own library. It plays video, music and photos stored on your device, on a home network share (such as SMB, NFS or a UPnP/DLNA server) or on a NAS, and presents them with artwork, descriptions and watch status. Its interface is designed for a TV remote, and it can be customised with different skins and settings.

Kodi is developed by the XBMC Foundation. KTB is not affiliated with or endorsed by the XBMC Foundation; we install the app for you and keep it working on your device.

Supported devices and requirements

  • Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD running tvOS 16 or later
  • iPhone and iPad running iOS / iPadOS 16 or later
  • An active KTB subscription – one subscription covers one device
  • An internet connection during installation and updates

No Mac or PC is needed, and you do not need to jailbreak your device.

Kodi versions on Apple TV

KTB currently installs Kodi 21.2 “Omega”, the latest stable release we support on tvOS and iOS. We only offer stable versions; beta and release-candidate builds are not installed on customer devices. This page replaces our older per-release news posts.

Kodi version Released Status at KTB
Kodi 21 “Omega” (21.0 – 21.2) Release candidate March 2024, final April 2024 Current – 21.2 installed by default
Kodi 20 “Nexus” (20.0 – 20.5) Beta November 2022, stable January 2023; point releases 20.3 – 20.5 in early 2024 Superseded – update to Kodi 21
Kodi 19 “Matrix” (19.0 – 19.4) Beta December 2020, final February 2021; point releases 19.2 – 19.4 in 2021 – 2022 Superseded – update to Kodi 21

Moving from Kodi 19 or 20 to Kodi 21 is a major upgrade: back up your settings first and check that the skins you use are compatible with the new version.

Updating Kodi

When a new stable Kodi release is ready for tvOS and iOS, KTB offers it as an update. Open KTB, select Kodi and choose Update. Your Kodi settings normally carry over, but we recommend making a backup first (see below), especially before moving to a new major version.

Backing up your Kodi settings

Kodi keeps its settings, library database, skins and favourites in its own app storage. Before reinstalling Kodi, updating to a new major version or moving to a new device, use Kodi’s built-in backup options or copy your Kodi data folder to a network share. If you are moving to a new Apple TV, iPhone or iPad, see Transfer your subscription to a new device.

Troubleshooting Kodi

  • Kodi says it is no longer available or will not open. Check that your subscription is active in My Account, then reinstall Kodi from KTB. See Troubleshooting.
  • Kodi crashes after a tvOS or iOS update. Install the latest Kodi version from KTB.
  • The remote does not respond in some screens. Kodi is controlled with the Siri Remote’s touch surface or clickpad; you can also use the Apple TV Remote in Control Centre on your iPhone.
